A deal has been reached!

The Aluminum Smelter and the ongoing modernization in Kitimat, BC, appears to be ready to continue without any labour disruptions.

The Union is preparing a news release and a bulletin now to advise all their members where and when they will be asked to support this deal negotiated by their executive.

Both RTA (Rio Tinto Alcan) and the Union (CAW 2301) worked throughout the night and all morning today, Tuesday, July 23rd, to reach this significant achievement.



The CAW Negotiations Committee is happy to announce that we have reached a tentative agreement with Rio Tinto Alcan. This weekend was a critical time with the expiry of our contract on July 23rd. The parties negotiated a marathon session lasting 29 hours leading to the tentative agreement on Tuesday July 24th at noon.

Some of the features of the tentative agreement are as follows:

• 5 year agreement

• Wages: Year 1 – 3%, Year 2 – 2.5%, Year 3 – 2.5%, Year 4 – 2.5%, Year 5 – 3%

• Job security letter (no lay-offs) re-signed

• All temporary workers hired to full-time

• Five terminated temporary welders hired to full-time

• $2500.00 Signing bonus for regulars, temporaries and LTD members

• Agreement on classifications for workers in the KMP

• Pension multiplier increases

• Retiree benefits increases

• Active employee benefit increases

• Increases to Shift, Weekend, Skilled Trades and Kemano premiums

An extensive list of the improvements made will be available later this week.

Contract ratification meetings will be held this week as follows:
