With perfect weather, The Gitxsan Cultural Days on August 18 & 19 were among the best in years with many performers, a variety of vendors and great attendance. There was fun and food for all ages.
A grand entry at noon was led by Gitxsan Chiefs and Elders and the dancers. Performers included the ‘Ksan Performing Arts Group, the All Clans Dancers, Gitxsan Gitamahes Dancers, Gitlaxdax Dancers, Bear Lake Drummers, Hoops Dancers and Sweleco.
A big tent was up in case of rain, but it served perfectly as a shade tent where elders could get out of the blazing sun.
Vendors offered herring roe on seaweed, amazing baking and a range of hand crafted and manufactured goods for shoppers.
Contests included soap berry preparation, moose calling and drumming and there were creative activities for young people in the artisan tent.
Later on Saturday noted entertainer Marcel Gagnon took the stage, and later still Mob Bounce, an alternative native Hip Hop group presented their creative sound.
The night continued at Gitanmaax Hall with a community dinner and family dance.
Sunday was another full day of events, performances and creative things to do. The day wound down with a 50/50 Bingo and open microphone time.
Gitanmaax Band noted the coordination, sponsorship and co-sponsorship of Gitanmaax Food & Fuel, Opus DaytonKnight, Peter Grant & Associated, Donovan & Company, CFTK, CFNR, Canadian Heritage and Canada.
