NEWS RELEASE · 11th September 2012
GTS
The Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs are expressing concern over the details of a draft Agreement in Principle between the province of BC and the Kitselas First Nation released today. The offer contains land that is part of Gitxsan traditional territory. This is being done without proper consultation or accommodation of the affected Simgiigyet (Chiefs).

“We are quite surprised and shocked to see our lands are part of this offer, considering the Gitxsan have legally enforceable title,” said Simoogit Skaýan (Anita Davis), “Under the circumstances, any trespass will not be tolerated as the province cannot ignore the law.”

In the 2002 Yal et al decision in the Supreme Court of BC it was found the Gitxsan had a strong claim of rights and a good claim of title. The Gitxsan practice an effective land tenure system over their 33,000 sq km of territory which has been in place for thousands of years. The title of the lands rests with the wilp (houses) of the Gitxsan Nation. On the other hand, the band`s jurisdiction rests on the reserves which were created around 1938.

“Clearly, the Gitxsan strength of claim is better than that of Band Councils. Indian Act bands do not have any land tenure off reserve and the province does not have constitutional authority to offer land belonging to the Gitxsan,” says Gwaans (Bev Clifton Percival), “We have asked provincial and federal negotiators at our table for information but have gotten no response yet.”

The Gitxsan Chiefs Office will work with the affected huwilp (houses) and look forward to meeting with the province ASAP to get an explanation.
Correct spelling is "RESPONSE."

Also, Marc Helcom, your feeble contribution to this discussion was not a response. Look "response" up in the dictionary.

It was a DIATRIBE, pure and simple. I assume you are an emotional supporter of the Gitxsan Treaty Society, and the Kitsumkalum and Kitseles treaty offices?

I am sure Bev Clifton, Elmer Derrick, Gerald Wesley, etc. are genuinely happy to have achieved your support.

(Mr. Ritchie: Was it necessary to publish this foul, uncivilized harangue of Marc Helcom's? I guess so, eh? After I read it, I said a prayer for you....for courage, and to give thanks).

Ed Note: Another Fan. This article is a word for word, unedited, news release from the GTS. Maybe you meant to post this on a different article? Oh, and a person can not "go back to" where one has never been.
omg, hilarious Janice...mind his own Gitxsan business...

Of course this is a very serious matter and we all have to unite to stop the likes of these "Leaders" from signing our lives away.

But, I had to laugh, Elmer Derrick is also going to help David Black (Black Press), raise $$$ to build a refinery in Kitimat.

It is evident that there are going to be people willing and ready to sign for any amount of $$, and pretty much from any corporations and/or Government. The more they sell out their own people, the more pat's on the head from the Gov.

If they really ruled themselves in the hereditary way, there would be so many shame feasts the whole northwest would be thriving and busting at the seams from the influx of $$$.
Why is Bev P. Clifton feigning surprise?
Comment by Janice Robinson on 11th September 2012
Anybody connected with the Gitxsan Treaty Society should not be surprised with major points of the Kitseles and Kitsumkalum treaty processes.....especially people so deeply involved like Bev Clifton and Elmer Derrick!

Come on Bev! Don't tell me how upset you might be. You do know Mel Bevan, Gerald Wesley and Alex Bolton, eh? Remember them? Your partners in crime. How often, in one week, do you talk, text, email, b.s. and schmooz with at least one of them?

Heck... Your friend and confidente, Elmer Derrick was at NWCC on Sept. 10...supporting, backslapping, congratulating and hugging nervous-nellies Gerald, Alex Bolton and Don Roberts. What was he doing there? While us Tsimshian looked on with concern and embarrassment, Elmer couldn't stop smiling. He should really mind his own Gitxsan business.

You assimilated ones cause a lot of pain and anger.
