COMMENTARY · 14th January 2013
Merv Ritchie
In a stunning display of audacity Ron Bartlett, a local media personality acting as the MC (Master of Ceremonies) for the opening celebrations of the new CN Rail spur line to the Kitsumkalum Rock Quarry, introduced Carol Leclerc. Not once, not twice, but fully three times he promoted her presence as the Liberal Candidate for the region.

Leclerc, looking at times uncomfortable, was even proclaimed to be a current Terrace City Councillor by Bartlett, "has been for many years", yet she did not even run during the last municipal election.

Leclerc has been chosen by the BC Liberal Party to run in the Provincial election, which is tentatively scheduled to be held on May 14, 2013, but has no position at all today.

Bartlett observed the present sitting MLA for the region, Robin Austin, leave the Community Hall where the gathering was being held and took the opportunity to once again highlight Leclerc, calling her up to stand beside him.

He called the local Member of Parliament, Nathan Cullen up for a chance to speak and then when he called for Austin he acknowledged he knew the MLA had another engagement to attend. He then called Leclerc to come stand beside him.

A quick glance at Cullen showed what appeared to be a look of disgust at this blatant use, by Bartlett, of the celebration to expose his personal political leanings.

Both Austin and Leclerc deserve a full and public apology by Bartlett. So do the people of Kitsumkalum, as do the representatives of CN who were inadvertently put in a circus show of political gamesmanship.

As a media person, using his position to perpetuate this nonsense while acting as the MC for a non-political event, he should be asked to resign.
