It was a friendly challenge that had its moments Saturday night as the Terrace Midgets, who are not small by any measure, took on the Terrace RCMP. As the first period got underway it was obvious the RCMP were going to have their hands full. Midway through the first period Inspector Stubbs skated over to the glass where we were filming and exclaimed “Boy, these guys are fast.” In the end they frustrated the RCMP by stealing the puck and sneaking it by their net minder 9 times.
The midgets opened the scoring in the first minute of play and about a minute later the RCMP followed suit. By the time seven minutes were up the Midgets scored their second with the RCMP coming right up behind again to even it up. They played the remainder of the period without another puck being placed in either net and came out to begin the second tied at two goals apiece.
The Midgets quickly opened it up and the RCMP were only able to reply once more to four more Midget goals. The third period saw the Midgets put three more away, all unanswered, ending the game winning 9 to 3.
The competition concluded with a couple sets of “Shoot Out” Hockey. In this round of play the RCMP demonstrated they were more efficient at shooting than the Midgets as they were consistently better, beating the Midget Goalie almost every time.
The game wasn’t without its tension either as a Midget player took an aggressive slash to the back of the knees of an RCMP player who was just getting up after a fall with another player. He turned to confront the assault and a third midget wrapped a gloved hand around his face and ripped up his helmet. It looked as if a serious fight was about to break out before cooler heads prevailed. The Midgets might think about who holds the ticket book off of the ice before they engage in such risky behaviour.
This is an Uncle and Nephew played against each other, not Father and son as we first reported, Oops - Our mistake - Thanks to our readers for the correction, Mom!
The nasty behind the knees slash caused a heated exchange
