Preliminary ringette action wows crowds

The Terrace Sportsplex was bustling with spectators Friday as they cheered on the players on a jam-packed first day of preliminary ringette play at the Terrace 2010 BC Winter Games.

The mixed team competition, with both girls and boys from across the province, was fast paced, with speed, good passing and excellent goaltending in all of the games. A number of individuals stood out, including Fraser Valley’s Katie Murray who struck for a hat-trick in an 8-4 victory over Vancouver-Squamish. Kyra Savard, another up and coming player for the Zone 3 Fraser Valley squad, also picked up 3 goals in a 6-4 win over Thompson-Okanagan.

The North West team was cheered on loudly by the hometown crowd in their match-up with Thompson-Okanagan, but fell 9-3. Their reaction, however, was more like that of a winning team. Vancouver Island assistant coach Teresa Fisher observed that a lot of the other teams were voicing loud support for the North West.

“The girls are all competing against each other,” Fisher said, “but they are all building great connections off the ice and cheering for each other. It’s all about having fun.”

Game 6 turned out to be an evenly matched battle between Fraser Valley (Zone 3) and Cariboo-North East (Zone 8), with the result coming down to the wire. Zone 3 took the win by a narrow 3-2 score.
