Vancouver-Squamish rules team table tennis

It was the Hongbo Fan and Gloria Ge Gao show Friday as table tennis swung into action at the Terrace 2010 BC Winter Games. Both players helped their Vancouver-Squamish Zone 5 teams to wins by going undefeated in their matches.

Table tennis play started with team competition at Kitsumkalum Hall, which looked more like a war zone than a gathering space with up to five games happening at once.

Zone 5 Vancouver-Squamish dominated both boys and girls team play, winning both gold medals. The silver went to Fraser River-Delta (Zone 4), whose only loss was a 3-1 setback to the paddles of Vancouver-Squamish, which featured a very close doubles match. Fraser Valley (Zone 3) took the bronze after winning two and losing two matches. Thompson-Okanagan (Zone 2) and North West (Zone 7) rounded out the top-five.

The girls team from Vancouver-Squamish won all three of its matches to capture the gold with a perfect 6 points. Gloria Ge Gao was spectacular, winning all five of her matches handily, the closest being 11-6 over Susannah Yip from Fraser River Delta. Just like the boys, Fraser River Delta (Zone 4) captured silver, with a 2-1 record. Fraser Valley’s (Zone 3) 1-2 record was good enough for bronze leaving North West in 4th going 0-4.

Both Fan and Ge Gao will be strong medal favourites as play shifts to singles action Saturday.
