The final Hockey game of the BC 2010 Winter Games in Terrace got underway Sunday morning at shortly after 9:30 am. The contenders were Fraser Valley (Zone 3) and Thompson Okanagan (Zone 2). With just under a minute and a half remaining in the first period Fraser Valley finally opened the scoring with an unassisted goal by #16, Kimberley Theodoric. Thompson Okanagan were unable to reply until almost halfway through the second period when they battered the net and # 6 Josephine stuffed it in the right side of goalie Laticia Castillo.
This was the score at the end of the second period, one goal apiece, with great saves and great chances by both teams. Thompson Okanagan took the majority of the penalties in the first two periods of play; an interference and a high stick, in the first, and a tripping, an interference and a roughing in the second. Fraser Valley only took one in the second for tripping.
The third period had faster action and heavier hitting as the Fraser Valley took dominance. Captain Sarah Thon put one away with a brilliant one timer slapshot from just inside the blue line at 13:31 and two minutes later # 2 Alyssa Erickson (assisted by # 17 Chelsea Wilson) skated through a field of opposition then across in front of the net dropping the puck easily into the net behind goalie Brittany Macleod.
With a two goal lead in the final minutes of the game, the Thompson Okanagan team pulled Macleod for the extra ‘man’ advantage and after a long slider that just missed the net, the Fraser Valley worked the puck back down the ice for a second chance at the open goal and #19 Reagan Chadwick slid it through diving players, across ice, to #6 ‘A’ Stephanie Digness who capped the win with 8 seconds on the clock.
The final eight seconds ran off the clock and the celebrations began for the Fraser Valley. Three penalties were called in the third; a hooking and a roughing to the Fraser Valley team in the last half of the period giving the Thompson Okanagan two 2 minute power play opportunities while they only allowed one with a tripping minor.
The entire game was well played between two evenly matched teams, a game that could have gone either way. Both goalies, Castillo and Macleod were exceptional; catching mid air pucks and diving ‘spread eagle’ to save the net.A Short Video Clip of the Close Calls and Goals can be Seen Here.
