The Skeena Wildcats Grade 8 boys basketball team traveled to Houston this past weekend for their zone playoffs. Unfortunately Coach Burnip was not able to accompany the team.

The team was ranked second in the zone coming into play on Friday afternoon. The team started off playing Bulkley Valley Christian School and with good performances by Leo Nast, Josh Hahn and Kiren Robinson the team coasted to an easy win.

Later that day they played a much improved Smithers Secondary School team. The Wildcats got out to a good start with the score at the half being 21-14 for Skeena. Smithers came back from a ten point deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Skeena made a surge at the end of the game to record a 43-35 win. This put the team through to the final on Saturday. Alex Banovic had 9 points from the guard position and Drew Kenmuir was solid on defense.

In the Final on Saturday the team played their rivals from Prince Rupert SS, and had to come up with one of the best games of the year to take the zones.

The boys came out a little tight and got behind early. In the third quarter Skeena pushed back but couldn’t make up the difference. Cael Geier was a monster on the boards, with Steven Schuss, Keel Haldane, and Kai Davies all playing well. Steven Schuss was named to the all star team.

Thanks to team manager Keegan (broken arm) McIntyre. Coach Lewis says they are a great group of boys and should be congratulated on the silver medal showing.
