The Pee Wee Reps have improved their record at the Provincials with a 3-1 victory over Fort St John in Winfield B.C. Goaltender Dion Johnson made a triumphant return to the lineup with a solid performance after returning from a broken collarbone which occurred six weeks ago.
The Terrace Kermodes got off to a quick start as Colin Bell scored off of a Fred Mowatt pass only 40 seconds into the game. With two minutes left in the period the Kermodes added a second goal. Ben (close but no) Zagar feathered a nice backhand pass to Jack Lafroth who fired the puck on net where Ryan Kawinsky pounced on the rebound and slid it in. The period ended 2-0 for Terrace but it could have been more as they had a huge territorial and physical edge in play.
The second frame was a different story as the team ran into penalty trouble . Fort St John finally took advantage of their odd man opportunities and closed the gap to 2-1 midway through the second. Goaltender Dion Johnson was solid making numerous saves to preserve the lead going into the intermission. At the intermission coach Rob Bell decided it was time to give the squad a bit of a pep talk. After the pep talk the boys sat there bewildered as they could not understand what he was saying due to his thick Scottish accent.
The boys settled down in the third period and added to their lead as the Lafrothian one head manned a pass to Carter Shannon who fired it into the bottom corner giving the boys a commanding 3-1 lead. Johnson shut the door the rest of the way for a 3-1 final score.
Lafroth, Mowatt, Johnson and Eric Vandevelde all had strong efforts.
Game three is tonight at 6 pm against Kelowna.
