The Terrace Pizza Hut Pee Wee Reps needed another comeback to ensure their spot in the provincial Tier three finals in Winfield B.C. Campbell River was their opponent and Terrace started off strong by opening the scoring two minutes in on a set play. Keaton Gordon won the faceoff in the opposing zone send it back to Colin Bell who fired it past the screened goaltender. Campbell River evened it up after the Kermodes took a couple of penalties of the suspect variety. The period ended 1-1 with the Terracites outshooting their opponents 11-9.
At the intermission coaches Rob Bell and Trevor Shannon looked to their Scottish roots to try and inspire the kids by re-enacting the final scenes of Braveheart; Trevor Shannon playing the role of Mel Gibson.
Their lack luster play carried over into the second in what might have been their worst period of the season. Terrace took some more penalties and Campbell River took the lead at 12:09 on a screened shot that beat Dion Johnson in the Terrace nets. Terrace took another penalty at 6:13 and Campbell River took a commanding 3-1 lead. The Kermodes seemed in disarray as Dion Johnson was called upon to make a few good saves to preserve the two goal deficit. The period ended 3-1 for Campbell River with Terrace in the box again after some more suspect officiating. Ryan Kawinsky and Cole (lil Rudy) Motschilnig were two of the bright spots after two periods with their strong play.
A re-energized Terrace team came out of the room for the third. Having almost erased a five goal deficit in one game in this tournament already, they had lots of experience to draw upon to make the comeback. They just had to refocus and stay out of the box. Colin Bell seemed to pick the team up by its bootstraps and quickly got one, two minutes into the third frame. The goal was identical to the first as Carter Shannon drew the puck back to Bell and he fired a screened shot past the tender. Three minutes later Bell buried a Liam (the human missile) Albright rebound to tie the score at three and completing his hat trick. Gordon also assisted on the play. At 9:32 of the frame Gordon completed the comeback. Eric Vandevelde passed the puck into the corner to Jack Lofroth who came out of the corner and fired the puck on net where Gordon banged the rebound between the goalie's legs. Terrace didn't add any more but the onslaught continued as they out shot Campbell River 17-3 in the third period. There were some tense moments at the end as Terrace spent the final two minutes in the box and had to hang on while shorthanded.
They have now earned a spot in the provincial against Castlegar. A team they barely beat in the round robin. Colton (San Jose) Starks and Ben (close but no) Zagar had their best games of the tournament. Bell was outstanding in the third.
The final is today at 11:00 am.
