The Terrace Under 16 Ringettes were not very nice to the host City of the Provincial Championships this past weekend as they trounced Penticton 10 to 1. This was just one of the games played, taking the Terrace Ringette Juniors (14 and 15 year olds) to the final game on Sunday March 21, which saw them win the U-16 "B" Provincials.
They beat Penticton (10-1), Vernon (5 -0) and the Fraser Valley (11-2) in the round robin action, losing only to Westside by a score of 6-4 who went undefeated until their last game.
In the semi finals the Terrace girls beat the Fraser Valley team for a second time, ending by a tighter score of 5-3, which brought them back to face the Westside team again. In this match they did not fail and took their oppents down in the final, 4-2.
Teresa Wraight and Roger Tooms, who coach the team, stressed a defensive approach at the beginning and stated in the end it was the shot blocking and stellar play of goalie Cole Broughton that made the difference.
“The final games were very fast and rough for a non-contact sport. In the loss to Westside we racked up 28 minutes in penalties and Westside received 20 minutes.” stated Tooms, “The players were exhausted at the end of the final and proved that they again came to play. Their hard work and dedication throughout the year paid off.”
This is the third provincial title for 5 of the players who have played together since age 5 and for 3 players it was their second.
The Coaches want to acknowledge the families who have been extremely supportive over the years, taking time off work and traveling long distances to the competitions.
