The BC Liberal bastion of White Rock saw an overcapacity crowd descend upon the Star of the Sea Hall, where some 800 people lined up around the block to sign the petition to repeal the HST. Hundreds of others joined in to hear Fight HST Leader, Bill Vander Zalm, and Lead Organizer Chris Delaney, explain how the tax will hurt consumers, seniors, young people, families and businesses.
“We had very little advertising, and no provincial media in attendance, but the people showed up in droves. Luckily, we had a great organizer in Pat Enair and her team to help us cope with the deluge, so it all went rather smoothly,’ said the beaming former premier.
Vander Zalm said the meetings are growing in attendance, and the more people hear about the HST, the more they oppose it.
“We had a CGA in Nelson who came to one of our meetings. Originally he thought harmonization would be more efficient. But after he heard about the loss to provincial sovereignty, and the damage to businesses, as well as the alternatives that could have been implemented to make business more competitive, he signed up as a canvasser and donated $100,’ said Vander Zalm.
Vander Zalm will now take his tour to Vancouver Island starting next week, with meetings throughout the lower mainland the following week, and then into the Cariboo region the first week of May.
“We are going to hit every major town in BC. We find the Town Halls work as very effective means to sign up canvassers and to get signatures for the petition.”
Vander Zalm says there are also a number of centrally located signature gathering places throughout BC now happening, “Businesses, community centres, malls, and other locations are being set up to collect the thousands of signatures required. We are posting each of these on our web site www.fighthst.com
as they come on, and we will be advertising them in the papers as well.”
“Quite frankly, the response has been mind boggling. I feel like the little Dutch boy trying to stop the dyke from exploding, but the wave is going right over us. So many people have had enough of having taxes and policies dictated to them by their government. They are fighting back now in what can only be described as an outright rebellion.”
