NEWS RELEASE · 15th April 2010
M. of Tourism, Culture & Arts
The Province has granted $20,000 to the Western Canadian Music Alliance's BreakOut West 2010 to showcase the music industry in Western Canada, Minister of Tourism Culture and the Arts Kevin Krueger announced today.

"We're excited Kelowna is hosting BreakOut West 2010. It's an opportunity to showcase both the strength of our music industry and vibrancy of our communities," said Krueger. "Events like BreakOut West bring economic benefits to B.C. - from tourism dollars to increased exposure for our artists and our communities."

The newly named BreakOut West weekend on Oct. 21-24, 2010, presented by the Western Canadian Music Alliance, will feature an industry conference, a showcase festival, the Western Canadian Music Awards Gala and the industry awards brunch. Over 600 musicians and industry representatives are expected to attend. This year's conference and awards gala is expected to generate over $1 million in economic activity for the host community.

"We're thankful to the Province for supporting BreakOut West," said Rick Fenton, executive director of the Western Canadian Music Alliance.

"We've re-envisioned this year's event to include development and networking opportunities for our industry members, as well as to provide a venue for emerging artists. We're also excited about attracting music industry professionals from Europe and the United States to Kelowna, whose reputation as a must-visit destination is recognized worldwide."

The Province has provided over $32 million in funding to B.C.'s music industry since 2001. In addition to this year's $20,000 grant for BreakOut West, the Province provided $20,000 for provincial collaboration through the Western Canadian Music Alliance.

The Western Canadian Music Alliance supports music of all genres in Western Canada. Its goal is to foster sustainable careers based in Western Canada for artists and industry professionals alike.
