The BC Public Service has been named one of Canada's Greenest Employers for the second year in a row today on Earth Day.
"Our government has set aggressive targets to become carbon-neutral and reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said Premier Campbell. "Receiving this award for the past two consecutive years is a testament to the BC Public Service and their exceptional leadership in helping us meet these targets, and in finding significant ways to improve the sustainable practices of government's operations."
Canada's Greenest Employers is a national competition that recognizes employers that are leading the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations.
"I am proud of the BC Public Service and the work our employees are doing to reduce our environmental footprint and establish sustainable practices, policies and initiatives that live up the standards of this national designation," said Citizens' Services Minister Ben Stewart.
"Everyone in the public service deserves our praise for changing their behaviour when it comes to carbon pollution," said John Yap, Minister of State for Climate Action. "Being recognized as a top green employer goes hand-in-hand with our goal of becoming North America's first carbon-neutral government in 2010."
The BC Public Service, B.C.'s largest corporate employer, received this honour for its commitment to be carbon neutral in 2010. The organization was also selected for establishing a requirement that all new government buildings be constructed to the minimum LEED Gold (or equivalent certification) standard, a hybrid-first purchasing policy for all new leased or purchased government vehicles, and an employee intranet that provides information as well as a place for sharing ideas on topics such as climate action.
The BC Public Service is an award-winning employer with national recognition. The BC Public Service was named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers and Canada's Most Family Friendly Employers in 2010, and was named one of B.C.'s top 55 employers for the third consecutive year.
The list of Canada's Greenest Employers is compiled by Mediacorp Canada through a review by the editors of the Canada's Top 100 Employers program. The full list of winners is announced in a special Earth Day editorial feature in the Globe and Mail on April 22.
