The Administrative and Professional Staff Association (APSA) at Simon Fraser University has ratified a two year agreement with the university under the government's 2010 mandate, announced Finance Minister Colin Hansen.

"I'm pleased to see that real progress continues to be made at the negotiating tables," said Hansen. "Despite the economic slowdown, a lot of good work has been done by unions and employers in collective bargaining across B.C.'s public sector."

APSA represents approximately 800 continuing, non-faculty management, supervisory and professional employees working at all SFU locations. Administrative and professional employees perform a wide range of functions at SFU and include medical professionals, senior technicians, directors, managers, administrative co ordinators and office administrators.

Faculty at Simon Fraser University also ratified a two-year extension of their existing contract under the 2010 mandate. Their agreement covers approximately 1,300 members represented by the SFU Faculty Association (SFUFA). Faculty members give lectures and seminars, perform advanced research in their field of expertise, and train new academics.

With an enrolment of over 30,000 students in eight faculties, SFU provides more than 100 undergraduate programs and more than 45 graduate offerings.

"It's great news that SFU's administrative and professional staff have reached an agreement," said Advanced Education and Labour Market Development Minister Moira Stilwell. "They play key roles in support of the academic mission and are an integral part of our post-secondary system in B.C."

Government has already announced its intention to control spending on wages during this round of bargaining. To protect jobs and preserve vital services British Columbians depend on, government does not have any funding for new wage increases as collective agreements are renewed.

There are approximately 310,000 unionized workers in occupations throughout B.C.'s public sector, the great majority of which have agreements that expire between March 31, 2010 and December 31, 2010. Just over half of B.C.'s public sector employees have now re-negotiated agreements that were set to expire in 2010, including major agreements in the health sector and the public service.
