NEWS RELEASE · 23rd June 2010
Terrace RCMP, along with members of the Terrace Emergency Response Team, and Police Dog Services, had an approximate 12 hour standoff with an armed male yesterday.
At approximately 8:30 am, police were called to a residence on the 4600 block of Scott in regards to a 29 year old distraught armed male who had barricaded himself inside his residence. Members of General Duty with assistance from other units within the detachment including the Emergency Response Team, set up containment. Negotiators were called and negotiations commenced.
At approximately 8:00pm the man exited the residence armed with numerous weapons. The male failed to comply with police commands. As such, a Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) was deployed in lieu of lethal force. The male was taken into custody and assessed on scene by Ambulance, before being transported to the Terrace Hospital for medical evaluation and psychiatric assessment. No one was injured as a result of this incident.
At no time were the citizens of our community in danger. Through the hard work and good negotiations by both Cpl. Brent Pearson and Cst Fritz Schmid, and the usage of the Conducted Energy Weapon, we were able to achieve a peaceful end to this incident without injury.
The investigation is ongoing, no further comments will be made regarding this matter.
