Approximately 200 people gathered at the start of the Second Annual Salmon Run
REPORTING · 27th June 2010

New Video of Event HERE.
It was a great turnout for the second Annual Salmon Run on the Kitsumkalum Reserve. The weather was perfect, even better than the year before. The first Annual Salmon Run was blistering hot. Sunday June, 27, 2010 the weather was comfortably warm with a bit of a breeze. Once again Environment Canada was completely inaccurate; having predicted rain. Under the tents, which were set up just in case, were treats and treasures for the runners and spectators. A huge salmon barbeque, pizza and salads, tee shirts and collectibles and at the finish line runners were offered bags of sliced oranges, carrots and bottles of water.

A total of 180 persons completed the course, up at least 50 from last year. The Elders 2 kilometer walk was completed by 20 who most treated as a leisurely stroll. The hard core runners took on either the 5 kilometer course or twice around the circuit at 10 kilometers. Almost equal number of participants completed each run; 79 did the 5 km and 81 did the 10 km run.

Some took this on as a fun event to walk and run with family and friends. Others (a clear majority) saw it as an opportunity to best their competition. Young Anthony Scodane, running the 10 km track in the 14 to 19 year old male grouping showed up everyone. He completed the run in 42 minutes and 20 seconds; first in his group and first overall. Pictured Below.

Continuing with the 10 km results, second over all, proving age has no boundaries, was Murray Warner (male age 55 to 99) at 42:28 running neck and neck with Dwane Felowich (male age 20 to 39) at 42:30. Forth overall in the same age group as Dwane was Mark Billey at 42:58 with Willie Muller nipping at his heels at 43:21. Number six was Levi Frose at 45:54 with the first female runner to complete the 10 km, Angela D’Elia, 15 seconds behind running a 46:45. Richard Kriegl from Bert's Deli (male 40 to 54) pulled in eighth position at 47:03 followed by Sheri Hamer (female 40 to 54) at 47:19. Arthur Campbell a 21 year old from Hazelton took the tenth position at 48:07.

Arthur Campbell was the first out of towner to take a place across the finish line. Runners came to this marathon from as far away as Prince George (Todd Alec, male 20 - 39 – 19th overall, 10 km at 51:53). Many participants were from the Hazeltons & Kitwanga areas and a few couples arrived from Prince Rupert and Smithers.

In the 5 kilometer competitive event, Gary Pettipas (male 55 to 99) came in first overall at 24:15. Brandon Williams (male 14 – 19) followed behind more than a minute after at 25:28 in the same age group just trailing behind was Graeme Linton in third at 25:38. Young Drew Kenmuir (male 1 – 13) cruised in just behind at 26:05. The women began to show up after Drew with Julie Moore (40 – 54) tacking up a 26:29 in fifth position with Karin Hein 45 seconds behind at 27:15. Eleven year old Ethan Kenmuir tallied up the 5 km run in 27:49 to start off his running career in seventh overall. Kam Seimens (female 20 – 39) took the eighth place at 27:51 with Beth Benzer (female 40 – 54) coming behind at 28:14 but just ahead of Robert Bell (male 40 – 54) who took tenth rank at 28:33.

Thank you to all the volunteers, businesses, organizations & participants for another successful SalmonRun. I think that this article is the greatest way to end off my day...thanks Merv. I was busy with other items of business during the run to take in the wonderful things you saw & documented...much appreciated. I'm looking forward to our 2011 event...hoping that we can increase our numbers even more...and raising money to improve the running trails. This is a super way to kick start the summer!
