Premier Gordon Campbell made the following statement on B.C. athlete Ryder Hesjedal's remarkable finish in the Tour de France bicycle race:
"On behalf of all British Columbians I congratulate Victoria's Ryder Hesjedal on finishing the gruelling Tour de France in seventh place, the highest finish by a Canadian in over 20 years. Ryder's performance throughout the competition was incredible.
"The Tour de France is the pinnacle of cycling competition, attracting 170 participants this year, making Ryder's final placement a significant accomplishment, building on an already successful career. In 2009 Ryder was named Canadian cyclist of the decade and male Canadian cyclist of the year.
"Like many of British Columbia's international athletes, Ryder is an alumnus of the BC Games program, part of our province's integrated system to help support athletes as they develop their potential. He is also an Olympian, and Canadian sports fans look forward to watching his future success."
