NEWS RELEASE · 26th July 2010
Merv Ritchie
Beginning at Fox Island, in the Aleution Islands just north and west of the Sacred Circle, a 6.7 Magnitude quake hit on the 17th of July, at about 11:00 pm our time. Just seven hours later a 6.9 struck at the opposite end of the world, in Papua New Guinea. For the next seven days the entire Pacific rim has been shake, rattle and rolling with quakes as big as 7.4 and 7.6 in the Phillipines. Twenty of them all bigger than 5.5 in seven days!

The Pacific Rim is known as the ring of fire due to the tectonic plate and volcanic activity. This past week has been a significant reminder that we are all at the mercy of the planet earth and what, as many say, “Mother Nature” decides to dish up.

The Haida Gwaii region including Prince Rupert and Kitimat are susceptible to the effects of the Pacific Rim shifts. It is always wise to be prepared.

Some feel that the constant movement is good as the pressure is being release. They believe that if there were no earthquakes for a period of time the hazard of a major quake is diminished. This may be true and no one can provide any guarantees. What is worrisome however is this region in particular has recorded major quakes which have dislodged hundreds to thousands of meters of shoreline into the Pacific at 3 to 400 year intervals. The Japanese recorded the tidal waves on their shores. We are over due for another. The last big recorded quake was a 9.0 that stretched from Vancouver Island to California on January 26, 1700.
