Wine and Suds
Beer brewing in Canada predates confederation by 200 years. In the beginning brewing was done at home. In1646 Brother Ambrose a Jesuit missionary became Canada’s first recorded brewer. It was in the lower city of Quebec that Jean Talon founded Canada’s first commercial brewery in 1688. He founded this enterprise to cut his colonies dependence on imported brandy. This beer became Canada’s first exported beer being shipped to the West Indies. Talon’s enterprise only lasted five years but his legacy can still be seen as the remains of his brewery is still called Talon’s Vaults and can be seen in Quebec City’s lower area.
