At Kitimat Council on Monday September 20th, School District 82 Board Chairperson, Barry Pankhurst, addressed Council on problems with busing. During questions, Councillor Rob Goffinet wanted to know if the rumours that the School board was dropping 2 trustees were true.
“The board voted by a five to four vote to reduce trustees from 9 to 7 which will result in one from Kitimat and one from Terrace and all the other are to stay the same,” said Pankhurst.
Now this change has to go to the Minister of Education for approval and for communities to get their input.
He said there was a lot of debate going on about population. With Kitimat and Terrace reducing to two trustees, Thornhill, Hazelton and Stewart remain at one trustee each. Although balanced, Pankhurst was concerned with the short distance between Terrace and Thornhill, the Terrace area still has three trustees.
Pankhurst stated this is another reduction for Kitimat. Before they were forced to amalgamate with the rest of the Regional District, Kitimat had 7 Trustees. After amalgamation, they only had three. Now they drop again to two with 20% of the population of the School district. Kitimat’s industry and workers contributes a lot of money into the school system.
This cut also means the School Board will save money; a whopping $30,000.
