NEWS RELEASE · 15th December 2010
For the third weekend in a row a Terrace rep hockey team travelled to the Okanagan for a hockey tournament, and for the third straight weekend the Terrace team came home as tournament champions. The Terrace Kermode Pizza Hut Peewee rep team capped off the trifecta by dominating the Kelowna Tier 3 tournament on December 10th-12th.
The first game for the Terrace boys was against a strong Surrey team. Team captain Carter Shannon sparked the team on his first shift, scoring his first of four goals in the game just 21 seconds in. From that point on the entire team played with confidence and enthusiasm, rolling to a 9-2 victory. Carter earned MVP honors for his efforts, while Gage Kluss earned the hustle award for his outstanding relentless for checking. Goaltender Marshall Wilson made some great saves early on to keep the Surrey team from gaining any momentum. Hunter Johnson tallied two goals, and single goals came from Joey Parkes, Gage Kluss, and Connor Onstein.
Game two was against the Kelowna Tier 4 team, a team that Terrace probably should have destroyed, but bus legs from the long trip seemed to finally catch up to the team, and it wasn’t such an easy game. Carter Shannon opened the game with another early goal putting Terrace up 1-0, but Kelowna came back with two of their own. Austin Price responded right away and tied the game at two early in the second period. Again Kelowna quickly restored their one goal lead, making it 3-2 near the midpoint of the second period. Austen McKean and Hunter Johnson scored the next two goals for Terrace, and then Kelowna tied it once again to make it 4-4 with 8 minutes left to play. Late in the game, the puck found its way to Hunter Johnson behind the Kelowna net. Hunter then muscled his way through the Kelowna defense and scored his second goal of the game with only 10 seconds left which proved to be the winner. Hunter earned MVP honors, and Joey Parkes, whose effort and timely hits early in the 3rd period helped pick up Terrace’s intensity, received the hustle award. Bobby Milligan played a solid game in net and picked up the win.
Game three was the final game for Terrace in their round robin pool, and had them up against a good Kamloops team. Terrace had to win to advance to the semi finals and although Terrace had beaten Kamloops earlier in the year by a score of 7-4, this wasn’t expected to be an easy game. However, faster than you can say Terrace Kermode Pizza Hut Peewee Reps, Carter Shannon had netted 4 straight goals against a stunned Kamloops team. Hunter Johnson and Joey Parkes each then added one of their own, and later in the game Nick Nordstrom scored his first goal of the tournament to make the final score 7-0. Marshall Wilson picked up the shut out. Connor Onstein played another incredible game on defense and earned MVP honors, while newcomer to the team, Jayson Kawinsky received the hustle award.
Game four was the semi final game against North Shore Winter Club. NSWC is one of the top 4 teams from the lower mainland in the peewee tier 3 division, so again this was expected to be a tough game. Carter Shannon opened the scoring with his first of two goals just 2:09 into the game. From that point on it was all Terrace, who cruised to a 9-1 victory. Hunter Johnson scored 3 goals, and singles were added by Gage Kluss, Austin Price, Austen McKean, and Sam Reinbolt. Bobby Milligan was tremendous in goal for Terrace, Colten Stark picked up MVP honors for his great play defensively, and Kyler Braid earned the hustle award for his work in the offensive zone. The only negative to this game was the penalty trouble Terrace put themselves into, but the defense for Terrace, especially Jackson Gagnon who was great all weekend, managed to kill off all nine penalties in the game.
The final game had Terrace facing the host Kelowna Tier 3 Rockets. Kelowna is the top team in the Okanagan league with a perfect 9-0 record, and outscoring their opponents 61-20 so far this season. Terrace was not intimidated and was up 3-0 before the end of the first period. Austen McKean opened the scoring with a bullet shot on the powerplay, and Carter Shannon scored the next two. Kelowna showed they weren’t about to give up and came back with three goals of their own, and tied the game at three with just over 9 minutes to play in the third period. With 5:37 left to play, Austin Price scored what proved to be the winner on a pinball shot through the Kelowna defense. For this Austin received MVP honors for the game. Sam Reinbolt who played great all weekend earned the hustle award. Hunter Johnson scored an insurance goal, and then Carter added an empty netter to seal the 6-3 win and the championship for the Terrace Kermode Pizza Hut Peewee Reps.
