Sixteen brave souls jumped into the freezing waters of Lakelse Lake on the first day of the New Year. The annual fund raiser, put on by the Kinsmen Club and monitored by the Terrace Water Search and Rescue is a success every year. In conjunction with this freezing bone chilling exercise is another huge fund raiser for the Kinsmen and Terrace, the Dream Car Raffle. A ticket purchased for only $20 offered one the chance at winning any car of their choice from the participating dealerships in Terrace up to a value of $30,000. After the Kermodei swim the Kinsmen drew from the barrel of tickets and the draw winner was Chester Munroe.
More money was raised by the jumpers who received pledges for their bravado. Over $3,000 was raised and Connie Kirby herself raised over $1,000. For this effort she won the trip for two from Hawkair with two nights at the Holiday Inn Downtown from CFNR. The best costume award went to Dale Lufkin. A group of four girls from Skeena School raised over $470 for their upcoming trip to China (Shayla Ruchotzke, Brandy Hamilton, Kendall Rygrok and Hayley Banovic.)
The Terrace Search and Rescue were on hand to prepare and protect those brave enough to endure the walk out to the hole in the ice and submerge themselves. The ice was over a foot thick, which once again made it safe for all the spectators to stand around and cheer on and laugh at the antics.
Attached below the following series of pictures is a very short, but high resolution, video clip of two jumpers.
Congratulations to the Kinsmen and all those who once again supported this very beneficial event and raffle. The Kinsmen ensure all the funds raised go directly back into the community of Terrace.
