NEWS RELEASE · 16th January 2011
On January 15, 2011 shortly after 08:00 am the Terrace Fire and RCMP attended multi-family residential building fire at 4514 Scott Avenue. Firefighters located an unconscious male in a bedroom. Medical assistance was given and he was transported to Mills Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. After the blaze was extinguished, a second deceased person was located in another bedroom.
The RCMP conducted an investigation into the circumstances of the fire which ultimately was the cause of death of the two males. The Fire Service Advisor from the Office of the Fire Commissioner conducted an investigation into the cause of fire. He was able to say that the likely cause of the fire was due to careless use of smoking material. The cause of the fire will be officially ruled as “Undetermined.”
The RCMP have determined that no foul play was involved. The investigation has been turned over to the Coroner’s Office. Police are not releasing the names of the deceased in respect of the families.
Lt. Warcup of The Terrace Fire Department would like people to ensure that their smoke detectors are operational and to sleep with their bedroom doors closed. Sleeping with your bedroom door closed will allow for more time to wake up and get out of a house in the event of a fire. As well, it can diminish the toxic levels of carbon monoxide from entering the room while you sleep.
TDN Note: Kalum Gardens has been the site of a series of unfortunate deaths over the past few months. Two young women passed away in separate incidences due to unforeseen medical conditions, both leaving infant children behind. This is a difficult time for many already living in hardship.
