Over 100 athletes converged on the Terrace Aquatic Centre this weekend as the Terrace Bluebacks hosted the Northwest Regional Championship Swim Meet. Starting on Friday afternoon swimmers from Terrace, Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Smithers & Houston competed with each other and themselves as many sought to set personal bests that would garner them entry into provincial and national level events coming up this spring.
Prince Rupert once again showed that they are the powerhouse in the region winning the team competition with 904 points. Gold medal performances from Avery Movold (10), Liam McChesney (10), Sarah McChesney (14), Gareth Croft (14) and Naomi Vanderneer (16) led the way for Rupert.
The Silver medal in the team results was hotly contested as the Terrace Bluebacks (528 points) rode the waves of Brittney Alfred (Gold - 10 & under girls), Aaron Arcadi (Silver 10 & under boys), Anke deWit (Silver 1-12 girls), Cameron Chanin (Bronze 13-14 boys), Laura Frederickson (Silver 15 & over girls) and Molly Gallant (Bronze 15 & over girls).
The Bulkley Valley Otters(450 points) rounded out the podium followed by the Kitimat Marlins(401 points) and the newest club to the region, the Houston Aqautic Club.
In addition to the fantastic competition exhibition races were held for the Terrace Blueback Dolphins, as young as 6 years old, who revelled in the opportunity to swim in front of the capacity crowd of parents, volunteers and swimming fans.
Of special note was the return of National Class swimmer Brandon Williams to the Bluebacks who came out of a six month retirement and wowed the kids and parents alike as he, without having done any training since July, pushed the top racers to the limit in a timed exhibition event.
Thomas Christensen records a PB in the breast stroke.
