Passions North - Jay Kryklywyj
Have you ever felt a lack of direction in your life? Have you ever felt like you’re just surviving in life and not really living it? Well if you do, you aren’t alone. Many of us have thoughts like this. Maybe you have a dead end job that you’ve taken because you’ve had to out of necessity. Maybe you’re in school wondering if the courses you’re taking are really the right thing for you. Or maybe your at home, as a stay at home parent, wondering if there’s more to your life than just cleaning up after kids and significant others. If happiness is something that eludes you, then perhaps you’re missing a key element to living a happy life.—Passion
How do you live passionate life? Well there are several schools of thought on this subject, and there are many guru’s out there who have a system to sell which promises you a happy life and wonderful results. Maybe you’ve tried a few of them only to find that yourself back to where you started from, a little more broke, and a little more frustrated. The fact is, there are no tricks, there are no magic spells, there are no ‘secrets’.
There is only one belief, and you must believe it one day at a time. That belief is that you, reading this right now, have a personal destiny. You have a reason to be here, and you have a purpose in your life. Its one of the hardest and most challenging concepts that you’ll ever believe about yourself. Now I can hear you all, sceptical thoughts coming to your minds, asking me “What do you mean I have a personal destiny? – What so special about me?” Well I have a question for you too… what isn’t so special about you?
Some might say they’ve been lucky in their lives to be where they are, some might say they are blessed, and some might say that there is a higher power at work. Whatever you believe personally doesn’t really matter. The constant belief is that you have a purpose and you have a reason to be. What becomes challenging is figuring out that purpose and aligning your life towards it. So the big question then becomes, what is your life’s true purpose.
No, its not a question you can answer here, or even after many many years of searching for it. But there are clues to what your true destiny is and those clues are your life’s passions. So what the question really becomes is : What are your passions?
A recent Harris Interactive study indicated that only 20% of us are living a passionate life, which means there must be a way to find the answer to that question. Its been found by 20% of the population after all and if you’re one of the 20%, that’s great! But if your one of the 80% who aren’t living your passions, if you feel that passion just isn’t a part of your life, keep reading.
Passions are the clues to your life’s true destiny and there are ways to determine what they are. Each passion is going to be different for each one of us, and perhaps you already know of a few of them. Perhaps a passion of yours might be to live a life of perfect health, or perhaps it might be to live near a warm body of water. Those are great passions and if they ring strongly for you, you may already have a life’s alignment towards them.
One of the tools for determining your passions that’s available comes from the NY best selling book The Passion Test TM : The Effortless Path to Discovering your Life’s True Destiny. by Janet Bray Attwood and Chris Attwood. What Janet and Chris developed was not a trick or a secret, but a system of discovering and prioritizing your personal passions. Through the use of the Passion Test, you can learn how to focus on your passions, and become a part of the 20% of the people living their passions.
This system works on three simple steps; Intention, Attention, and No Tension. Its simple to say and very easy to do. The effortless part of the system is simply ensuring that you follow these three steps consistently. Each step must be taken individually and completed for each passion you feel strongly for. So now let’s break them down a bit individually and see how they work.
First you set the intention of what you want your passion to be. This can be anything you feel strongly about or desire, in any of the areas of your life. Such areas as work, pleasure, recreation, health, financial, and even relationships, it doesn’t matter. This step serves to bring clarity to your passion and ensure that what you want is clear and easy to focus on. Any idea, invention, or system started out in a persons mind. Everything you use, everything you have around you, had to have been imagined or ‘intentioned’ before someone could go ahead and invent it. None of it was truly by accident. So by that logic it makes sense that your passion would also be something you need to imagine or ‘intend’. Once you have that intention in mind and you’re clear as to what it is, your next step is to focus on it.
The next step is to pay ‘Attention’ to the things around you that have to do with your passion. We do it all the time without every really noticing it. Have you ever noticed when someone close to you has a new baby or is expecting, how suddenly when you’re walking through a store or go down town that there are babies almost everywhere? This is your mind paying attention to babies. The same system can be used to focus on your passion. When an opportunity comes along that will open up a path towards your passion, you’ll notice it immediately and be able to take action!
The last is called no tension, and that’s exactly what it is. You need to sit back, relax, and let the opportunities your paying attention to, come about. This may sound counter intuitive to what many of us may have been taught about seeking out opportunity and hunting down every chance. But the fact is, if you paying attention to your passions, you are already seeking out those opportunities. The reason we say to relax and let things happen, is to resist the urge to try and make something happen. After all have you ever tried to make something happen that just wasn’t ready or able to happen yet? What happens? You get tired, you get frustrated, you get stressed, and eventually you give up on trying to make it happen. Effectively, you stop paying attention to it, and that is when the opportunity can pass you by.
Now I don’t expect you to believe me instantly or have all of this ring true immediately. We live in a world full of opportunity guru’s ready and willing to sell you their ‘secrets’ to a long lasting and happy life. Just look at the amount of self help books that are shelved in your local book store. But if you have an open mind and have nothing to lose, try out these little tips and see what experiences you have. What have you got to lose except time… .and what could you potentially gain?
