Members of the Adult Badminton Club are enjoying the warmth of the Thornhill Jr. Secondary's gym as they let the birdies fly during their Tuesday and Thursday meets.
The 38 year old club has a healthy group of regulars but is still open for all skill levels and even hosts some of the higher level junior badminton players. The only criteria is age of course as it is an adult group, all members must be 18 and over.
Membership is not necessary as those looking to just stop in from time to time can pay a $5.00 drop-in fee. Once you hit the courts and you find that this is a challenge you want to take upon yourself, you can always join the club with a low membership of $115 per year or $65 for half a year.
The group doesn’t stop at just providing a place to swing your racquet around. Organizers offer coaching and instruction to those who are looking to play for the first time or even those who are returning to the sport after a lengthy hiatus. According to Norm Parry, a 25 year member and one of the organizers, many of those in the club joined as adults who played a bit when they were younger and decided to give it a try again.
In addition to helping you improve your skills if you have any at all to begin with (if not they can help you just learn how to hold a racquet correctlyas in my case), the club hosts two annual tournaments; one in November and the other in April. They host a local tournament and a more regional one that sees competitors travel to Terrace from areas such as Smithers, Prince Rupert, Kitimat and even Prince George. Parry noted that the April tournament is a joint tournament with the Adult and Junior Badminton Club.
For those interested in checking out the club, head down to the Thornhill Jr. Secondary gym on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 8-10 pm. Or you can call Norm Parry at 250.635.9422 or Ron Julseth at 250.635.3088
Remember to bring your own racquet and court shoes. Birdies are provided.
