CONTRIBUTION · 28th February 2011
Arjunna Miyagawa
It was a celebration to top all celebration as eager performers and spectators packed the newly built community centre in Gingolx (Kincolith) for Hobiyee 2011 (Nisga’a New Year)

Hobiyee is held in one of the four Nass Valley communities (Gitwinsilkw, Gingolx, Laxgalts’ap and New Aiyansh), of which they rotate each year. This year was Kincolith’s turn to be host of the annual event.

This year’s Hobiyee marked the first major event in the new building, other than that of its grand opening, which was held earlier in February.

This was my third Hobiyee in as many years. The shivers that ran down my spine were as prevalent as the first time I was blessed with the opportunity to witness the spectacular event. The shear grandness of the centre was matched by the electricity of the grand entrance of the opening night. An awe inspiring sea of red and black overtook the hall as hundreds dressed in regalia danced and drummed their way into the center of the crowd. Every once in a while a voice would shout, “Hobiyee!” and each time with a mighty roar the crowd would reply, "Hobiyee!!”

The rumble of the drums and the echoes of the singing are still vibrating in my ears, yet at this very moment all I can think about is Hobiyee 2012.

If you have never been before, I strongly suggest you put it on your list of must-do’s.

Thank you Janice for your beautiful poem. Your description of the drums being thunderous is right on the mark. In all my life, I have never seen such an amazing display of drums than that of the 3 rows of drummers during the grand entrance. I tried my best to capture the length of the rows of drums. I love to capture moments and make them immortal. It's so nice to get some feedback.

Thankyou for bringing your heart and camera to this event.
Perusing your written description,
And devouring the photos ....
Made my heart skip beats,
As my spirit embraced the imagined thunder
of Nisga'a drums.
