Illness of Kitimats head coach results in late Coy Cup coaching change for Ice Demons as Mike Steponavicus fills in for Danny Baker

Due to the sudden illness of Kitimat Ice Demons head coach, Danny Baker, former coach Mike Steponavicius will again be behind the bench for the Demons in Prince Rupert. Steponavicius was at the helm for the Ice Demons when they won three Coy Cup championships in four years. Between March 8-12 this year, they will make a run for a fourth Cup.

Coach Danny Baker was admitted to Kitimat General Hospital on the weekend where the team lost in two intense games in the CIHL playoffs final in Williams Lake. General Manager Terry Marleau and former GM, Mike Whelan, were left to handle the bench.

The players asked Steponavicius if he would take over the bench and today he agreed and will handle the Thursday night practice and a couple of additional workouts scheduled over the weekend.

The Prince Rupert Rampage is hosting the Coy Cup in the Jim Cicerone Memorial Arena. The Ice Demons are scheduled to face the Williams Lake Stampeders for their fourth game in succession as the tournament opens. The four team roster is filled out by last year's Coy Cup winner, and the Rampages first opponent of the tournament, the Powell River Regals.

After a Round Robin, the leading team will get a bye to the final on Saturday. The next two teams in points totals will play a semi-final Friday, March 11, for a spot in the 2011 Provincial Senior AA Men's Championship on Saturday, March 12.

Kitimat, Williams Lake and Powell River are all previous Coy Cup winners so the competition level is expected to be very high.
Wishing Mr Baker all the best
