NEWS RELEASE · 23rd March 2011
Elections BC
The petition to recall the Honourable Don McRae, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Comox Valley electoral district, contains insufficient signatures to proceed to the verification process.

Acting Chief Electoral Officer, Craig James, said, “Under the Recall and Initiative Act, 19,348 signatures were required, representing 40 percent of the registered voters who were registered in the Comox Valley electoral district at the May 12, 2009 General Election. As the requirements of the Act have not been met, the petition has failed.”

The recall petition was issued to proponent, Kathryn Jean Elizabeth Askew, on Friday, January 21, 2011. A total of 139 voters registered as canvassers to collect signatures on the petition. The petition was submitted on Tuesday, March 22, 2011.

The recall proponent, MLA and advertising sponsors must file financial disclosure reports with the Chief Electoral Officer on or before 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2011.
Recall legislation came into force in 1995.

Twenty four recall applications have been given approval in principle by the Chief Electoral Officer. Two recall petitions are currently underway in the Kamloops-North Thompson and Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows electoral districts.
