NEWS RELEASE · 5th May 2011
Old Massett Village Council is doing water testing to make sure we are not exposed to radiation from the events in JAPAN. I will post the latest test results on the band office bulletin board and on the HEALTH CENTER bulletin board as soon as the results come in. We are testing the rainwater, the stream water (near Rivtow) and the tap water. In addition we will be testing other products as we think this is necessary.
We are testing for: Cesium 134, Cesium 137, Iodine 131 & Ruthenium 103
TEST DATE: April 28th. 2011.
We are seeing an increased presence of one radiation component (Iodine -131) in RAIN WATER. This number keeps fluctuating and has now risen above background levels again although still at a modest level. This confirms that this testing should continue.
Although it is probably safe to drink rain water the uncertainty around the unstable situation and because the weather and events in Japan keep changing, to be completely safe it would be best not to drink rainwater at all.
We are testing seaweed at this time and will post the results as soon as we receive them.
We are planning to monitor home grown vegetables and fish products too very soon. We will also post these results.
Both tap water and stream water continue to show absolutely no signs of any radiation contamination and therefore are safe to drink from our viewpoint.
Destructive Corporations large donors to Governments

It is time for the people to rise up and be heard.
Governments will not willing share this sort of information with the public as they do not want mass panic. These large corporations that cause most damage to the ecosystem and economy are usually funding the politicians, therefor they don't dare to lose their bonus salary to bring down these destructive corporations, instead they blindly look away and act as if they care but have their hands politically tied unable to help.
In the end people care only of their money, not of you or I. I would like to see more action in the governmental world that is helping the people, the environment and the economy. The only change I have seen has been the ones that make a change in their wallets. They do not care about the contaminated debris on it's way to Canadian shores as it cannot be seen yet and they cannot foresee the a benefit to them.
The aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear plants will effect Canada's west coast more than we can imagine. It is up to us the people to be prepared and fight for the protection of our people and environment. We must encourage and push leaders to act on their role of protecting our country and lead us into a new era where we can help to heal the land that is currently being contaminated and destroyed around us.

Yes, I thank you all that are concerned about the radiation from Japan. As we share the same ocean waters. Testing is testing, & should be governments duty as well:)
