On May 13 , 2011 the Caledonia Kermode’s Senior Rugby team hosted the Smithers Gryphons in what was to be the last game prior to the winner moving on to Provincials.
The weather was excellent with a slight breeze that helped with sunny warm skies of spring in Terrace.
The game was completed with a Smithers win defeating the home squad 13-3. In a hard fought defensive style, both teams worked very hard to attain offensive yardage. Three times the Gryphons stopped our boys within a mere yard or two from scoring.
The home team hasn’t been together for more than a few months but the knowledge and character development demonstrated in this match appeared as if they had been together much longer.
Hats off and a big thank you, to the coaching and support people behind the scenes, making sure that all players are in the right frame of mind when playing this game. All the coaches worked these boys very hard in practice and the effort returned was not disappointing. The Smithers team has been together for more than three years developing and honing their skills, according to some of the out of town people that came to cheer on their team.
After the game both teams shared a refreshment and food, played a game called “silly bugger”. This is similar to the real game without the tackling; the touch rules are in play. Where they got the energy to play is beyond me.
I thought this showed class and effect of mutual appreciation of the sport in good will. Again well done by the coaches is handling a very aggressive sport with proper gamesmanship afterwards.
