NEWS RELEASE · 7th June 2011
Northwest Fire Centre
Danger trees have been removed along the highway which has allowed for the opening of Highway 37.
With the opening of the highway north of Dease Lake, the Northwest Fire Centre wants to remind the public that the fire is still active and drivers should travel with caution as firefighters still work actively in the area.
The restricted area order has been amended and now reflects a smaller area. The order now applies to all Crown land from one kilometre north of Wheeler Lake, to the Beaver Dam rest stop and 25 kilometres east and west of Highway 37. People may enter this area only in the course of travelling to and from their residence or when using Highway 37 as defined in the Highway Act.
A fire camp has now been set up and will house and feed the firefighters. Now that there is the support for the firefighters in place, an additional 80 firefighters are expected to arrive today. These firefighters join the 44 firefighters already on site as well as close to 20 support staff.
