Ksan Society is pleasantly reeling from the enthusiastic response to its FRUGALICIOUS FRIDAYS campaign! Now completing its fourth event – the winner receives groceries, menus and recipes for a day’s meals excluding snacks – the now 100+ (and growing) participants are eager to compete to win, find a new recipe and learn about how to build a healthier meal in a frugal way.
Frugalicious (frugal, nutritious and delicious!) Fridays is an online, Facebook contest where Ksan Society, Northern Health, the Greater Terrace Food Association and FoodShare Terrace have come together to present a ‘it doesn’t cost a lot to eat healthy’ campaign. This free contest occurs every second week and is open to anyone living in the local area. Search for Ksan Society on Facebook or follow the link from the Society’s website.
Our Frugalicious meals are developed by a dietician courtesy of Northern Health and focus on bulk foods, shopping the perimeter of the super market for affordable fresh produce and finding creative meatless ways to get adequate protein. The recipes are posted on the Ksan web site www.ksansociety.ca
Ksan is anticipating an expansion of the campaign so people can come together to enjoy frugal, delicious and nutritious meals, maybe find a new family favourite, meet and visit with their neighbours and generally just have a good time. “We want to take the campaign which is currently an on line Facebook effort right into the community”, says Ksan Community Connector Marianne Weston. “That way we can talk about how much the shopping cost, how we made decisions on what to buy and what to substitute, and perhaps pass on a few cooking and healthy eating tips in the process.”
The Frugalicious Friday Meal Gatherings will take place at the soon to be unveiled Ksan Place. The Society has been busily renovating their old Shelter into a community space. It includes a large kitchen and two generous meeting areas.
To make this a reality, the Frugalicious Fridays campaign needs help with a Kitchen Drive – we are seeking donations kitchen appliances and utensils for when we gather to make the meals. Food processors, grinders, blenders, pots, pans, mixing bowls, baking dishes, knives, measuring cups – you name it, Frugalicious Friday can use it. “We envision a big old Kitchen Swap. Everyone has things in their kitchen they don’t use any more and everyone has something they would use if it was available ... We have clients and community members who can make good use of any duplicate items we don’t need,” adds Weston. “De-clutter is the magic word – you can clear out your cupboards and pantry and donate to a worthy cause at the same time”.
All items can be dropped at Ksan administration office 4838 Lazelle Street during regular business hours with a note they are for the Frugalicious Fridays Kitchen Drive.
