NEWS RELEASE · 20th August 2011
Joan Iamele
Sponsored by the Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC Branch

August 28, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Furlong Campgrounds

“In British Columbia, over one quarter of a million people either has Chronic Kidney Disease, or are at risk of developing it -- and the numbers are mounting rapidly,” says Ken Merkley, the volunteer president of The Kidney Foundation’s BC Branch. “Our goal is to help improve the lives of people affected by kidney disease, help prevent the growth of this incurable disease, and promote organ donation.”

Beginning at 1:00 pm, Sunday, August 28th, walkers are invited to register for the walk and join their friends, family and neighbors in taking their first steps in becoming a kidney hero by participating in the walk and registering to be an organ donor! (The sticker on your driver’s license is no longer the process).

This fun-filled event will include entertainment, hot dog bbq, and prizes – all to raise money to help support the mission of The Kidney Foundation.

Of the 85% of B.C Residents who said they would donate their organs, only 17% have registered to be organ donors.

On behalf of the 145,000 kidney patients in BC, we would appreciate it if you would consider participating in the 2011 KIDNEY WALK and help us raise awareness of the importance of organ donation.

Be a Kidney Hero and help save lives.

The Kidney Foundation of Canada is a grass-roots, volunteer-based organization that strives to not only help improve the lives of those with kidney disease, but also works to promote awareness to B.C communities about kidney health through various annual fundraisers and events.

In August 2011, The Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC Branch will be celebrating four years of community-based kidney walks. In year one, a fledgling group of 7 communities came together to see if they could make a difference in the lives of kidney patients and their families. They could. They did.

This year 19 communities around BC are championing this extraordinary grassroots event and together they are joining forces to create a movement to raise funds and increase awareness of the need for more organ donors.
