NEWS RELEASE · 5th September 2011
Having admirably filled a number of management positions at Northwest Community College (NWCC) over the last six years, Dave O’Leary is the ideal candidate to fill a new and important position that will oversee future College growth and stability, says College President Dr. Denise Henning.
O’Leary, who had most recently been NWCC’s Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Dean of Business, Computer Technology & Business Technology, assumes the role of Vice-President, Institutional Advancement – effective this week. In his new role, O’Leary will lead the College’s fundraising and marketing arms in support of its mission and provide stability for growth.
Dr. Henning says NWCC is fortunate to have O’Leary to fill a position she views as being essential for the College to reach its full potential as a post-secondary institution.
“What really struck me about Dave and his work here is his clear passion for NWCC’s success,” said Dr. Henning. “Dave has enthusiastically filled a number of different management portfolios because he embraces new challenges willingly. I’m confident this new role will suit what I’ve come to admire as two of his greatest strengths – his engaging personality and relationship building skills and his ability to think strategically.”
O’Leary, who will also be responsible for overseeing the College’s Communications, Ancillary Services and Events & Conference Planning departments, says he sees the new position as a challenge rather than a promotion.
“Regardless of my title, I have always been proud to represent Northwest Community College,” said O’Leary. “I strongly believe in the work we do in offering the highest quality post-secondary education in the Northwest for the benefit of our students and communities. I am honoured to be tasked with helping to strengthen that foundation for future success and growth.”
In addition to his most previous portfolios, O’Leary has also held the Dean of Trades and Director of Communications portfolios at NWCC. Prior to NWCC, he was Head of Advising, taught in the Business Faculty and spent five years as the Web Manager at Capilano College (now Capilano University). O’Leary’s post-secondary education spans the country. His undergraduate studies were completed at Memorial University of Newfoundland and he holds a Masters degree from the University of British Columbia. Dave also completed a Diploma in Adult Education from the University of Alberta.
Outside of NWCC, O’Leary’s other pursuits include being the co-founder and now Director of an award-winning computer technology business and as a business development mentor to a number of successful start-up ventures. He is Chair of the Canadian National Council of Deans of Information Technology and sits as a Director on the national sector council for the information technology industry in Canada, the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC).
He is a Director of the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS) for BC and recently earned two professional designations in IT from CIPS – the Information Systems Professional (ISP) and the Information Technology Certified Professional (ITCP). Most recently, he presented as part of a worldwide twenty-four hour live web conference sponsored by Global Information Technology Community Association (GITCA) and Microsoft that covered a wide range of aspects of Cloud Computing, the computing world’s biggest shift since the expansion of the internet.
