LEBLOND LEADS FLYERS TO WIN OVER STEINBACH TO KICK OFF THE NEW SEASON
Captain Chapen Leblond scored three times in the third period as the Winkler Flyers beat the Steinbach Pistons 7-4 in their regular season home opener. The Flyers fought through a slow start and erased a 2-0 Steinbach lead as they started their season 1-0.
The good fortunes for Steinbach’s rookie goaltender Brendan Edie would run out in the third period. Just under five minutes into the frame Chapen Leblond, who was named the new captain for this season this week scored his first of the season to give the Orange and Black their first lead of the hockey game. Just minutes later Leblond scored again to put the Flyers up by a pair.
With just under nine minutes to play in regulation, former Flyer Brock Genyk jammed home a loose puck to pull the Pistons to within a goal. The Pistons had a great chance to tie the game as they found themselves on a power-play with around two minutes to go.
However, Leblond would put the final nail in the coffin when he stole the puck away from the Piston defender and raced down the ice towards Edie. Leblond’s snap shot beat the young Pistons netminder low blocker to put Winkler ahead by two with just 2:15 to play. Read it all by clicking here Thanks to reader John Amos for the tip
