REPORTING · 5th December 2011
At 6:30 pm tonight the newly elected Council will be sworn in. The purpose of this meeting, more than to just swear in the newly elected Council members, is to select from this new group, who will be representing Terrace at the Regional District Kitimat Stikine (RDKS) Board table. Terrace will need to select two representatives from their group of seven (six Councillors and the Mayor) to sit as regular board members of the RDKS and two as alternates.
During the previous years both Brad Pollard and Carol Leclrec were the regular board members. Neither of them have returned to Council. Bruce Martindale and Brian Downie were alternates and only Brian Downie remains at the council table. Downie has never sat as a regular at the RDKS.
Lynne Christiansen has previously been a regular at the RDKS as has newly returning Marylin Davies.
The entire RDKS will be facing an almost complete facelift with not only the representation from Terrace changing. Kitimat is also hosting their inaugural Council meeting tonight and will also be selecting a new RDKS representative as their previous rep, Bob Corless was not re-elected. New Hazeltons and Stewarts representatives will also change. There will also be new Rural regional representation changes in Area C with Doug McLeod and in Area B with Linda Pierre.
At present, before these inaugural meetings get underway, only 5 of the previous 12 RDKS directors will be returning to resume their duties around the table.
Will Terrace select those who have had previous RDKS experience? Kitimat could do the same however only the Mayor, Joanne Monahan, has previously been on the RDKS board. She has many years experience and has even chaired the board table. Or will the Municipal governments continue the trend and select new blood for the future?
Tonight we will see. At 6:30 pm the swearing in will begin in Terrace and at 7:30 in Kitimat. By the close of the evening we will know who the new RDKS board room will consist of.
The RDKS will hold there inaugural meeting this Friday at the boardroom on the third floor offices at 4545 Lazelle Avenue in Terrace.
