It was a day like no other in Canadian Political History. Never since 1867 has any sitting government in Canada produced such a shocking display of extremes. Complete and utter contempt of the entire electoral process. The admittance of a wrongdoing with the most sincere and heartfelt apology. And yet another apology to a false accusation. But it didn’t end there as the NDP, Jack Laytons team, stood in full contrast glowing with vindication and strength of character as they watched the episode unfold. Layton is watching proudly.
Today a great crime is unfolding. The Harper Conservatives are being exposed for orchestrating a seditious and traitorous act on the Canadian people. Purposefully manipulating the right and proper thinking of the every day man and woman. Dozens of Ridings have been exposed to this act, now under RCMP investigation. It has to do with a call center scheme to direct voters who might vote, other than Conservative, to the wrong voting location. It has been reported this call center operation was located in Edmonton, Alberta.
Contemptuous is the right word. And that is exactly why Canadians voted last May, 2011. The Harper Conservatives were brought down by the other party’s in a motion proclaiming the Harper Conservatives were in contempt of Parliament. The history leading to this was extensive and it continues today.
This event is quickly unfolding. Time will tell but the next proper move might be the Governor General declaring the Harper Conservative Government invalid. Vote tampering is by far the most treacherous act.
The Liberal Party also did something almost unheard of in Parliamentary history. The leader of the Party, interim Leader Bob Rae, stood up and announced they discovered one of their staff members was responsible for committing an embarrassing episode. The Liberals did this before anyone else had it figured out. They came forward, completely on their own, and laid the story bare of how their staff person created a twitter account to reveal Vic Toews personal divorce history. Fully acknowledging the wrong doing and fully apologising, something never before heard of, at least in my 50 years of watching politics, Toews completely and unreservedly accepted it. A decency uncommon to Parliament.
But the stinger to this story is how the Harper Conservatives, those who were fired for contempt of Parliament, turned to face the NDP in shame. They had accused the NDP of what the Liberals had just freely admitted to being fully responsible for. With not nearly the sincerity, not even close to the candour or generosity expressed by the Liberals, the Conservatives acknowledged they were wrong in accusing the NDP of perpetrating the Vic Toews Twitter feeds affair. To use the words “Dirty Tricks” is to do the efforts of the Conservatives a huge disservice. Greater adjectives need to be employed; treachery, deceit, perfidious, malevolent, nefarious, even none of these seem to address the true nature behind the corruption of thought. Those who perpetrated the infiltration of the minds, the actions, of everyday Canadians who simply were attempting to conduct their civic duty and vote, are without measure the worst of society.
The Liberals are generally not much different though this new bar reached by the Conservatives breaks all previous unethical records. These two teams have been running Canada since the very beginning; 1867. And today, just over 6 months after Jack Layton passed away, Canadians are getting a first hand look at what he had in mind.
Layton’s team stood proud in the Canadian House of Parliament while the Liberals and Conservatives fell over themselves in shame. We won’t forget you Mr. Layton and no matter what the fall out is in the next few months, Canadians have just enjoyed an example of what decent political life is and what decent political life isn’t.
gone too soon.
