Even more thrilled than making the final five in Canada for Kraft Hockeyville Saturday night, is the response the volunteer crew behind West Kelowna’s bid is receiving from celebrities and others around the world.
“If you’d have asked us a few weeks ago if we’d ever thought we’d be receiving videos from PGA legends, getting messages of support from iconic NHL’ers and phone calls from the Premier of the Province, we’d have thought you were crazy, but that’s what’s happening now that we’ve made The Kraft Hockeyville finals.” Says Kraft Hockeyville Co-Chair, Andrew Deans.
Since making the top five in the nationwide competition, local Hockeyville organizers have been receiving support from a shopping list of celebrities including current NHL’ers and former stars Alex Burrows, Andrew Ebbett, Dany Heatley, Theo Fleury, Russ Courtnall, Brad May, Zdeno Chara, among others. But West Kelowna’s celebrity support hasn’t been limited to the world of hockey, PGA golfers Bob Tway, Tim Simpson and Andy Bean have all sent videos supporting the community’s bid.
Voters in Stirling, Ontario, West Kelowna’s main competition in the final round of voting, have been expressing their own concern through social media over what they see as being a swell of support for BC’s bid.
“I think what has Stirling and others concerned is not just the high profile of some of our supporters, but also how far reaching the support is. We’ve had votes spilling in from South Africa, Indonesia, Finland, Germany, the UK, Shanghai, Hong Kong, you name it.”
“As for Canada, we’re continually getting posts on our Facebook page and Twitter page from all over BC, and virtually every Province in the country. And all this is in addition to ourvoting centre, which has been packed most of the weekend. But we need every one of those votes and then some. By our estimation, we’ll need 3 million votes to win this, triple what we got last round.” Explains Deans.
For making the final five, West Kelowna is already guaranteed $25,000 and will host CBC live from their local arena, Royal LePage Place when the winner is announced live during Hockey Night In Canada on March 31st.
