The McCarthy GM Terrace bantam rep hockey team won their opening game of the Tier 3 provincials in Burnaby in decisive fashion on Sunday morning. The boys defeated a strong team from Powell River 9 to 4.
Terrace started strong in this one as they opened the scoring 7 seconds into the game as Eric Vandeveldes dump in, careened off the boards out front to Keaton Gordon who put the puck into the yawning cage. The goaltender stepped out of his net to play the puck but it took a strange bounce and ended up in front as he fell behind the net. Moments later on the power play Cole Motschilnig (reminiscent of a young Al MacInnis ) fired a blast from the point to add to the lead.
Powell River got one back before Gordon added 2 more to complete the hatrick before the 10 minute mark of the opening period. Both goals were created by the terrific passing by Colin Bell and Fred Mowatt.
The Motschilnigian one added his second late in the frame for a 5-1 lead. Although Terrace had a commanding lead it was not indicative of the play as the shots were fairly even. Thomas Bothello had to be sharp in the Terrace nets. He made numerous good saves.
In the second period the line of Mowatt, Bell and Gordon added 3 more goals with each player getting one. Powell River added one for an 8-2 Terrace lead after 2 periods.
In the third Powell River added 2 goals to make it mildly uncomfortable for the Terraceites before Carter Shannon buried a rebound to make it 9-4. Coach Jessie Schroeder was unable to attend the first game of the tournament as he remained in Terrace to witness the birth of his daughter. The coaching reigns were taken over by Trevor Shannon and Rob Bell in his absence.
Coach Shannon who was once an aspiring magician found the win to be a perfect birthday present. Even to this day you still see signs of his trickery as one moment the case of beer was there and the next moment it was gone.
There was a lot of strong performances for Terrace on this day. Gordon picked up 7 points, Bell picked up 6 (reminiscent of a young Rob Bell who tore up the Scottish elite league in his younger days) Freddie Mowatt had 4 points and Cole added 2 goals. Eric Vandevelde and Colton Stark also had strong games on the back end.
Game 2 goes today at 1pm against Dawson Creek at the Burnaby Winter Club.
