I am a Tsimshian woman, and have not had a drink (by the Grace of God) for a few days. If I were drunk today, my shame would prevent me from dragging my sorry arse about town looking for sympathy, and for coinage to buy that next bottle.

Alcoholism, and addiction to other toxins, has done more to defeat/conquer our nations than the Indian Act, racism or any residential school, etc. Oh, I know the sad excuses....."That is why I drink! You would to, if you were me!" Wah! Addiction is slow death. It kills the human from the inside out. It is a disease of body, mind, emotion and soul. Alcohol is called "firewater," because it is a bottle of ANGER which brings the family violence, sexual abuse, sadness, fear, hunger and lies.

It is not possible to be Tsimshian when we are drinking or drugging. Alcohol makes you "Just another drunken Indian." You cannot wear your blanket/vest if you are drinking. It is of the utmost importance for the drunken Indian to run out of excuses for his/her failure to embrace life.

In Terrace, there are self-help group meetings every day of the week. Counsellors are a dime-a-dozen. If the drunk does not like one counsellor, don't give up.....go find another one. Tell your drunken family member to go get a life. Pray. the majority of alcoholics/addicts will die painful, lonely, sordid deaths. Get help. Go to treatment. This is unacceptable. Do not accept this.
