NEWS RELEASE · 5th June 2012
Representatives of the Dare to Dream Foundation and the Coast Mountains School District met in Terrace last week to continue to plan for the success of the local Elementary Band Program. There was agreement from everyone present that the Terrace community has a unique and rich culture of outstanding school and community band programs reaching back many years and that it is a legacy to be proud of, and to maintain in the future.
While Grade Seven students will take Band at Skeena Middle School next year, Grade Six students will continue to receive their band instruction at their elementary school. A concern raised was that enrolment in Grade Six Band at some schools is down, and those present at the meeting, agreed to work together to encourage more students to enroll in Grade Six Band in those schools.
To encourage increased student participation, the Dare to Dream Foundation has offered to support individual students in acquiring band instruments. The foundation also provides Band T-Shirts and funds the Elementary Band Retreat and the Elementary School “Tour de Terrace” by Grade Seven Band students each year.
The school district is very appreciative of this support and encourages parents of students who are interested in Band, but not yet enrolled at their school, to contact their school principal, who will in turn work with the Foundation.
The Coast Mountains School District will continue to strive to make “taking Band” a real possibility for every learner and is deeply grateful for the support of the Dare to Dream Foundation.
