Kitimat Search and Rescue members were called out in the early hours of Wednesday June 20th to respond to a missing 51 year old on the Kitimat River.
Four teams were dispatched including a team searching by helicopter, two river teams assisted by Kitimat Hatchery employees as well as Terrace's Swift Water Rescue Team.
The lone subject was last seen leaving in a canoe from the Orange bridge between Kitimat and Terrace on Tuesday afternoon. Concerned friends called the RCMP after he didn't return home Tuesday evening.
The man was located and rescued by helicopter at approximately 4:45 AM Wednesday along the Kitimat River north of the airpark. His canoe had hit debris in the river late Tuesday afternoon and capsized.
The man was submersed and hung up on a branch before freeing himself and making his way to shore where he spent the night. He credits his lifejacket for saving his life.
The man taken by Kitimat SAR to the Kitimat General Hospital for treatment of his injuries and was kept there for observation.
This is an important reminder to all boaters and those especially on the rivers to:
- Provide a pre-trip plan with someone dependable indicating where you are going and when you should be expected to return.
- Only travel in waters you are familiar with.
- Always wear a personal floatation device.
- Be prepared for the unexpected
Kitimat Search and Rescue would like to thank the Terrace's Swift Water Team and Kitimat Hatchery employees for their assistance as well as Quantum Helicopters.
