Terrace Daily News
At 2:00 pm today, Sunday, June 24, 2012, in Kitimat at the City Center Mall (Lower Level) residents will be gathering to hold a Rally and short march to demonstrate their united opposition to the planned Enbridge Northern Gateway twin pipeline proposal.

The Rally is being sponsored by Douglas Channel Watch and is planned to mark the ‘Beginning of the End’. Next week in Kitamaat Village the Enbridge Northern Gateway, National Energy Board, Joint Review Panel will hold their final session scheduled for the region most likely to be impacted by the proposal. The official hearings began in Kitamaat Village on January 10, 2011.

As this last session gets underway a few Federal Members of Parliament will arrive to listen to residents concerns. Following is a note from Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP, and Opposition House Leader, Nathan Cullen;

I have the wonderful pleasure of being able to host Megan Leslie (NDP Deputy Leader, Critic for the Environment and MP for Halifax) and BC NDP MPs for a tour of Terrace and Kitimat next week.

As many of you are aware, Enbridge is currently proposing the construction of a 1,172 km pipeline from Alberta to Kitimat, British Colombia. The resulting raw bitumen would then be transported along B.C.’s pristine North Coast in more than 220 super-tankers per year. These coastal waters are home to a diverse and delicate marine ecosystem including more than 120 species of sea birds, 27 species of marine mammals, and important salmon, halibut and other fish stocks. The significant environmental impact of a potential spill cannot be understated.

Megan Leslie is travelling to Kitamaat Village on June 26th to observe the Joint Review Panel Public Hearing taking place on that day. As this is an important issue throughout the province, we want to hear from you too. We will be holding an “Enbridge Pipeline and Tankers on B.C.’s Coast Public Forum” for a discussion about these issues, the environmental implications and how you can get involved. The event is being held on Tuesday June 26th at the Best Western in Terrace (4553 Greig Avenue) from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Here are links to the event: and on Facebook at

Megan and I will be joined by the following NDP BC Members of Parliament:

Randall Garrison, MP for Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca and Public Safety & LGBTT Critic
Fin Donnelly, MP for New Westminster-Coquitlam and Western Economic Diversification Canada
Alex Atamanenko, MP for B.C. Southern Interior
Denise Savoie, MP for Victoria and Deputy Speaker of the House

We hope you can join us for this extremely important discussion.
