The 12th annual Canada Day Celebration will be held at Heritage Park Museum from 11am – 4pm on July 1st. This Canada Day will be unlike any other celebration. This year’s Canada day is a multi-purpose event. We will be celebrating Canada’s July 1, 1867 confederation, as well as holding a silent auction where the proceeds will go towards a downtown museum to broaden Terrace’s history. Marketing and Events Coordinator Rose Lariviere explains,
“This year the funds raised in the silent auction are contributing towards a down town museum location, because Heritage Park only displays the pioneer history of Terrace. We need to incorporate First Nations history into our museum displays, to show the truly diverse history of Terrace.”
Given last year’s statistics, with a crowd hovering around 2000 people, Heritage Park’s Canada Day Celebration is expected to attract the same number of people, if not more. Many local businesses have donated items to the silent auction that will be appropriate for people of all ages. Some of the generous donations include a round-trip flight to Vancouver courtesy of Hawkair, designer handbags, and more. Heritage Park is hoping to generate money that will go towards opening the new museum.
During the all-ages event there will be many different activities, such as live bands, a performance by the Nisga’a Dancers, food vendors, the silent auction and more. There will also be events for kids, such as historical scavenger hunts, horse logging, chainsaw carving, blacksmith demonstrations, gold panning, French finger knitting, and more! Lariviere concluded,
“Some of the events will be taking place outside; however, many activities will be under tents and inside the pioneer buildings, therefore Canada Day Celebrations will continue rain or shine!”
